I'm actually kinda suprised by some of these responses. I guess one or two stat points (are we talking attributes here? because I would hope the difference between Frigate 4 and 5 (for example) is apparent, in that Frigate 5 is a pre-req for other, better things.) is negligable for certain things.
But you gotta remember, you (and I) are coming in VERY late in the game. And most of the people that are here, doing PvP - they are just like you. And have been for months or years. Optimization is key for PvP. Check out some of the threads in ships and modules forum. Don't get me wrong, you could join a corp, and still make a huge impact without being the most efficent player out there. Also, the fact that a patch just shook things up big time helps level the playing field... umm... star system... a bit.
But the bottom line is that, from what you've described, an MMO like Eve, with a built in calculator, is (a) all about optimization, which also means (b), it is totally for you. You just have to bear in mind that there are corps around with guys like you, who are willing to help, and that for the most part, whatever your calculations reveal, you probably can't do it as well as you want to just yet. So let it train, and grind out those misisons in the mean time. Then figure it out when you can, and run it by people here, or in your trusted corp.
After reading OP more carefully, I wanted to add that I too, remade a character, and I lost over 200K SP. While I'm sure that my decisions aren't optimally efficient, I know it's definitely a huge step in the right direction, as I was mixed up over attributes for a long time.
My advice to you, here and now, is make three similar characters, the only difference being the tough decisions you're wrestling with for the attribute layout. Then, put each of them in evemon. Then give them all the same identical ship, identically fitted. This ship should be your best guess as to what you want to do - long term. Whichever gets to it faster is your main. Delete the other two, to return their names to the available pool.
